Rex Dixon has suggested a valuable source, but remember that the 1944 edition contains post offices in occupied Czechoslovakia and Poland.
My records show 42,925 post offices in Germany in 1934 and 56,274 at the end of March 1943. The difference can easily be accounted for by the annexations of Austria, the Sudetenland, Alsace-Lorraine, and some smaller areas. Keep in mind though that many of these offices were small affairs that did not have cancellations as such. My experience tells me that if you are collecting material from a given period, say 1933 to 1945, you need EVERY annual listing. There WERE changes, and some small offices never were recorded in the listings. For example, I have a great postcard with a Hindenberg stamp from a postal agency at an Autobahn construction camp, which did not last long enough to be listed.Keep your eye for stamps used at telegraph and telephone offices. They exist, but they are scarce. I like the Hindenberg stamps, too, but I have never specialized in them. Ben Beede |
