The more one goes into this the more interesting it becomes ! Although I am by no means an expert in these matters my observation is that with the exception of interruptions between belligerent countries, censorship, war action etc., the domestic postal services in Germany functioned pretty much as normal right up to the end of 1944/early 1945. Looking up North Borneo in my 'stamp atlas' reminds me of course that the area was occupied by Japan from Jan 1942 to June 1945, and Japan of course was part of the Axis alliance with Germany. So your stamp may well have had a Japanese connection in some way. Unfortunately my now rather ancient Stanley Gibbons British Commonwealth catalogue does not reveal whether the 1909 set or other pre-war sets of North Borneo stamps were still valid for use in 1942 - it's quite possible they were but you would need to consult someone more knowledgeable in this area to be sure. Best wishes, Giles |
