Message: | James Mackay "Guiness Book of Stamps", 1982, p.196 states that photolithography "was first used philatelically in 1911" for the Bavarian Luitpold issue printed by Oskar Consee of Munich, and that photogravure "was developed in Germany in the 1890s as a process for book and magazine illustrations [and] was first used [philatelically]for the Bavarian definitive series of 1914, printed by F.A.Bruckmann of Munich". This isn't a comprehensive historical study of the processes, but it is a widely accessible, printed source. I'll stay with it until it's shown to be wrong! And clearly Munich was a lively place for the intersection of art, design, printing and stamp production in the early 20th century. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
