Message: | I've looked up your question in Doberer's book, library #541. It certainly confirms that the 1911 90th-birthday series was printed by litho in plates made by photo-reduction. Whether they were the world's first is not stated. I can recommend this book: it devotes 20 pages to the development of this issue, detailing all the artists and essays.
As for the 1914 issue, it's always stated that this is the world's first photogravure stamp, but Doberer doesn't mention this either. He doesn't even use this word. Instead he quotes the official gazette which describes the printing as |
