The Michel Privatpostmarken-Spezial 2005/6 Band 1 lists three private postal companies that operated in Bremen and their stamps: A. Briefbeförderung 'Hammonia' 1.12.1886 to 23.3.1887; B. Privat -Briefbeförderungs-Anstalt 5.5.1896 to 31.3.1900; C.Packetfahrt Bremen 14.4.1901 to 1.4.1903.
Generally speaking the private postal companies pitched their postcard and letter rates just below the prevailing Reichspost rates and they tended to offer additional services to help make their businesses viable, often unsuccessfully. Again generally they operated out of a business premises, sometimes the printing works where they printed their own stamps and postal stationery and they employed postmen making several delivery rounds a day. I am unsure whether the postmen also collected mail as they went or whether letter-boxes were set up or whether people posting mail using their services had to take it to the private post office.
