Charles,
Microscopic examination suggests that the postmark date is 8.9.43 - which would place it nearly a year before the liberation. As I have replied to Alan, such examination also strongly suggests that the postmark overlies the overprint.
This item forms part of an extensive German collection assembled by my father-in-law, which was inherited by my wife. We have been valuing the collection for insurance purposes and the Festung Morlaix item is just one of several that we cannot find in any Michel catalogue. The collection include many very rare items, many of which he had expertised and we have every reason to believe that his collecting was meticulous. What he actually wrote in the album about the Morlaix was "Piece with 1Fr50 and 3Fr Petain head issue each with typewritten overprints Festung Morlaix. 3Fr tied by MORLAIX - FINISTERE 8.9.43. Only five piece are purported to exist". |
