Message: | Brian In October 1920, the exchange control offices were told to stop examining unregistered mail. Some offices had a huge surplus of labels which were used up in 1920 and 1921 at other offices. So surplus Karlsruhe labels (office 11) were used up at Munich (office 16). Your label appears to be type 11Ln9c which is not common - see my article in Germania August 2001 pages 185-203. I have recorded this once used at Karlsruhe on 7.12.20 and twice used at Munich on 12.2.21 and 4.3.21. There is a 'smudge' beside the number 11 which is likely to be a hand stamped 16 (for Munich). The number 198 is a Munich inspector's number recorded used from Jan 1920 to March 1921. The Munich arms cachet is very common recorded used from Feb 1921 to July 1922. Burscheid is in the British bridgehead across the Rhine from Cologne. So one might have expected the letter to have been routed via Dresden and examined there. Robin | ||||||||||||||||||||
