Dear Brian, an article appeared in Germania Vol. 13 No. 5 (Oct 1977) by Alan Smith 'Sheet margins of the inflation'. Alan also published a short addendum in Vol. 14 No.1 to rectify an omission in his article. I have both of these back issues in stock and in case you do not have them I can send them to you, if you wish, for just £2.00 altogether including UK postage. Alan Smith's 6-page article is very comprehensive and helpful and I am sure will answer many of your queries. For example the word 'Anlage' is explained as an occasional marking meaning 'plan' or 'arrangement', occurring on only one of the four formes making up a printing plate, included as some kind of guide to the printer. Alan doesn't mention any word 'Unlage' but I wonder whether on your sheet this is written in an old style German typeface where an 'a', open at the top, can look like a 'u' thus the word on this sheet may again simply be 'Anlage'. Alan's article also refers to the printing of the printer's name or initials in the bottom left hand corners of sheets so that may explain the 'KC'. Best wishes, Giles |
