Message: | Dear John, clearly this is an official letter probably from a District Government office of some kind in Katz (Kreis Neustadt, Westpreusssen. Close examination of the embossed seal should reveal more. I think the necessary endorsement for an official, postage-free, letter bottom left may say 'Kreisensache'(district business), but I am happy to be corrected on this. The small boxed KATZ postmark without year date is typical of many used in Prussia in the 1840s/1850s, but without contextual evidence one cannot narrow it down. Unfortunately the Langenau, West Preuss. arrival mark is also one without a year date. I presume as you haven't mentioned it that there is nothing on the back. Regards, Giles. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
