Message: | Dear Norman I don’t have specialist knowledge of Baden, but I think the same problem occurs with other areas of early philately. I encounter this for example with early Prussian postmarks on Danzig covers. The short answer really is that without contextual evidence the actual year of posting cannot be determined. Expertisers will determine whether a postmark and stamp are genuine and properly applied but again without evidence they may only be able to give a range of dates if asked to do so. Expertisers may well have more information available to them than a collector such as records of progressive wear to postmarks which may help them narrow down range even perhaps to the year of actual usage. They may also have more knowledge on overlapping dates of use of other postal markings or labels or postal stationery. Cheers Giles | ||||||||||||||||||||
