Message: I recently purchased an entire with the notations of Recom(m)andirt. One is in script and one is in a single line strike surrounded by a border looking like perforation. I realize that this word means "recorded". My query is this similar to the modern day recorded delivery and how did it work? The value of the two stamps amounts to 10 Kreuzer The letter was posted in Salzungen on the 15 1 73 to Leipzig; on the reverse there is an AUSGABE A Hufeisenstempel of Lepzig namely (21) 2y. Spalink says that the period of use was until 31.7.1872 with the comment that the exact period of use is difficult to ascertain. The tming appears to be 61/2 N. This cancel is very faint but the date and cancel correspond to the address; it is probably too faint to scan. Does anybody out there know of such late useage of this cancel and was it still in use only for recorded delivery items? Many thanks Norman
