There is a good deal of detailed information on cash paid frankings (markings with "Gebuehr bezahlt" inscriptions are simply part of the story). The authoritative book for the inflation period seems to remain Johannes Nawrocki's Gebuerhenstempel der Inflationszeit. Although this book dates from 1940, it is often available as a reprint. For more information, you probably should contact the INFLA study group in Germany. Hans-J. Richter's Barfrankaturen in den vier Besatzungszonen Deutschlands und in Berlin 1945-1949 (2000)is a revision of an earlier catalog, dating from 1977, I believe. There is an active German study group interested in cash frankings and
other emergency measures. The literature in English seems to be quite limited. There are some articles in Germania, and hardly any in the U.S. publication, the German Postal Specialist. Cash paid markings interest me, but I have not collected them seriously, except for those used in the period 1924-April 1945). Cash paid markings were used other than in the years 1923 and 1945-1949 for various reasons. B.R. Beede |
