R. Lerche (Robert Lerche) was a German stamp dealer who published a pamphlet in 1930 about the so-called stamps from Wituland or Suahililand. A philatelist (Herbert Schrey) wrote an article critical of Lerche in which he stated: “Post Over-Secretary R. Lerche, of Naumburg - in contrast to his clients (who later landed [?] in the penitentiary!), immaculately honorable as a man and philatelist – tried conscientiously to document the genuineness of the Swahili stamps, using documents given him (… from the estate of Denhardt).” (My translation.)
Does anyone know what the statment about Lerche’s clients going to prison refers to? Does Lerche have a good or bad reputation?
Thanks!
