(The star represents the last letter of star)I have probably phrased the query incorrectly since using Google I cannot achieve even a hint of an answer to what I donr find particularly unusual considering the time in question but have never come across before.
I have a German Addressed cover (Only outside image available below) postmarked ?ONT 7.2.21 using 2x 5pf & 1x 30pf Germania stamps Totaling 40pf. The fascinating feature of this envelope is that looking inside it becomes obvious that the envelope was turned in side out, since it had addresee and cancelled stamp displayed. So this used envelope was used a 2nd time ,sent to a new addresee, significantly with an increased value of stamps .
The sender quite inadvertantly has provided a classic example of the the very early period of inflation in that the first use the Cancelled BONN 21.1.21. value of the Germania stamp is 10Pf and just a week later (see image)the value of the Germania stamps totals 40pf with postmark cancellation :?ONT 7.2.21 using 2x 5pf & 1x 30pf Germania stamps ! Consequently it displays the raw evidence of the postage cost quadrupling in 1 week! Little did the sender know that some 22 months later the cost would have increased over 100 million times that!
So it makes sense in those early days of inflation to save money where possible – hence the reusing of the envelope .
I would like to know was this practice common and what in philatelic terms is the practice known by!
Any links for further information would be appreciated!
iro the image below I have not disturbed the seal to scan inside but included is the impression of the 1st used information on the cover where the cancellation impression of BONN is also distinguishable! Finally the 3rdview is of the original gum from the overturned flap. - Very Interesting item I believe - I welcome any comment - Thank you. |
