I recent bought some pre war Reich covers (including some flown Zepps) and was checking my Mi. Specialized for the value on cover. There are listings for used and on cover for the wrong direction ribbing “waagerecht Gummiriffelung”, as opposed to “senkerecht” (vertical) ribs. I do know that there may be some telltale evidence of the ridging on surfaces through the paper, but it is almost impossible to tell. It seems to me that the Germans (being the anal observationalists that they are) would not be prone to wild leaps of the imagination to determine the value of a stamp considering the value may be significantly different according to the gum orientation. I’m curious as to how this is determined. Any help is appreciated!
