Message: | Hello Charles, I think you will find that the postal agency handstamp placed correctly next to the stamp is that of Studenitz bei Pöltschach (now Poljcane in Slovenia) when annexed by Germany. This village is situated 35km south of Maribor where the philatelist addressee lived. My understanding is that mail from such postal agencies was to be taken in the first instance to their controlling post office for the stamps to be cancelled (probably in this case Maribor). In this instance the datestamp was not applied over the stamp because I don't think German stamps were valid for use there at the time hence the blue crayoned cross. It seems the philatelist addressee was curious to see what happened if he applied a German stamp. Best wishes Giles | ||||||||||||||||||||
