Message: | What follows is purely a guess, but I wonder if the Pola, which was, apparently, rather old by World War I, could have been an "accommodation ship" for U-boat crews, who probably did not sleep aboard while in port. Navies sometimes used old vessels for housing (whoops, better say berthing) enlisted personnel. The United Navy term was and probably still is "receiving ship." Have you checked the Naval Annual or Jane's Fighting Ships for say 1913? Even those volumes, though, might not pick up a vessel that no longer put out to sea. Interesting inquiry. Good luck, Ben Beede | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
