Hello Ben - the answer to your question is one that has been argued over, but Herr Hans-Joachim Düsterwald provides evidence in his three volume 'Luftpost Danzig' that the last verifiable flight was by DLH on 18 March 1945. He provides two citations: (i) an Attest (570/86) by Gustav Mogler BPP-Verbandsprüfer Deutsche Feldpost 1939/45 and (ii) a detailed report by the author Günther Ott (Luftfahrt International Nr. 5/1980 & Arge Deutsche Feldpost 1939-1945, Rundbrief 30, Sept. 1983)which states that on 16 March JU/52/3m D-ASHC took off from Berlin-Tempelhof at 17.40 on 16 March and landed at Anklam at 18.55. A possibility arose for the flight to continue to Danzig, so at 06.05 on 17 March the plane set off, taking a wide arc over the Baltic, and arrived at Danzig-Langfuhr two hours later. The plane was then grounded there for the rest of the day because of intensive artillery fire and the danger of enemy fighters, but managed to get way at 03.40 on 18 March returning to Tempelhof at 08.00. Best wishes, Giles. |
