I have just acquired a used copy of the rouletted 1864 4x4 schilling red (SG6)of Mecklenburg -Schwerin. However, this particular stamp has a Hamburg postmark.
As Hamburg is not in M-S, and was issuing its own stamps anyway at that time, I find this surprising, especially as the two states had different currencies (M-S, 48 Schilling= 1 Thaler; Hamburg, 16 Schilling-1 mark.
It seems unlikely to be a forged postmark, as Gibbons values mint copies at £550 as against £95 for used.
Can anyone suggest a solution to this apparent anomaly?
Many thanks
