Website Color Enhances VW Postal History
April 30, 2003 --- The Germany Philatelic Society is using its website to bring out the color in its journal in an experiment intended to be of interest to members and non-members alike.
The centerpiece of the current issue of the German Postal Specialist is “The People’s Car - A Volkswagen Chronicle.” This 40-page feature with 67 images presents more than 50 years of German postal history and markings, adapted from the award-winning eight-frame exhibit by Daniel C. Olsen.
Some of the more outstanding items from the exhibit, pictured in black and white in the Specialist, are featured in color at the Germany Philatelic Society website:

The idea is that the color showcase may attract new members to the 54-year-old society, while also giving current members a more appealing, close-up look at some outstanding items, including scarce pre-World War II and wartime VW-related material.
“We’d love to publish in color, of course,” says GPS Webmaster Jerry Jensen, “but the cost is prohibitive for a publication chiefly funded by the dues of about 1,350 members in the United States, Canada and overseas. This way, we can deliver color at minimal expense to our members.”
The German Postal Specialist is published 10 times per year, with eight 48-page issues and two 96-page issues. This variable format gives the Specialist the flexibility to cover more substantial and extensive subjects, as in this issue.
The April-May double issue also includes a “My Favorite Find” column by Charles L. Williams documenting a scarce 10-billion mark Inflation cover discovered for $7.50 in a dealer’s box, an inaugural column by A. Lavar Taylor on German seapost and ship’s mail, a story by Howard W. Geisler of a 1924 cover from Saar to Iceland and much more.
